Excel Tips: Break Out First and Last Names Easily

Updated over 3 weeks ago

If you have a list of full names in one column and need to separate them into First Name and Last Name, Excel provides a few easy ways to do this.

Best for: When you want a quick and simple way to split names based on a space.

Steps:

  1. Select the column that contains the full names (e.g. Column A).

  2. Go to the Data tab in the top ribbon.

  3. Click on Text to Columns.

  4. In the wizard that appears, choose Delimited, then click Next.

  5. Check the box for Space, then click Next.

  6. Choose where you want the split data to appear (the default will overwrite the original column).

  7. Click Finish.

➡️ The first and last names will now appear in two separate columns.
